The Physical Geography of the Sea (2017)
The Physical Geography of the Sea is part of Farthest North, a collaboration with Claudia O’Steen. It reveals an expedition along the Gulf Stream from the Gulf of Mexico to Svalbard, and into the pack ice near the North Pole. It draws together video and audio documentation, drawing, and text written from personal expedition journals.
The Physical Geography of the Sea traces the artists’ route along the Gulf Stream. The video reveals an expedition from Pensacola, FL to the pack ice near the North Pole. It draws together documentation, drawing, and text from personal expedition journals and the journals of Matthew Fontaine Maury (father of modern oceanography). The video mixes digital and analog documentation.
The melting polar ice caps reduce the speed of gulf stream and may eventually bring it to a halt, disrupting a wide range of ecosystems. The video presents a complex ocean system, where water conditions from one locale directly affect and impact conditions in a geographically distant locale.
The project touches upon our profound connection to the natural systems around us, asking the viewer to move through the world with heightened observational faculties in order to contribute to our larger understanding of our place within the natural world, how it affects us, and how we affect it.
